What is Moissanite?
Natural Moissanite was discovered towards the end of the 20th century by Henri Moissan. When a falling star struck the earth, he found Moissanite crystals in its impact crater that were incredibly strong and shined brilliantly. The meteorites that bring us these crystals have managed to freely travel trillions of kilometres through space, only to find their final resting place on earth at the end of their journey.



It is very rare that a meteorite containing Moissanite lands on earth. Because of this rarity, most Moissanite gemstones are man-made these days. Moissanite scores a 9.25 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness, surpassing other minerals such as steel and titanium, but also other gemstones such as ruby and sapphire. Diamond is the only gemstone that suprasses Moissanite in hardness, as it scores a 10 on Mohs scale.

Moissanite is loved for its fiery rainbow reflection of light. This is because Moissanite has a refractive index ranging from 2.65 – 2.69, which is higher than even a diamond.

The Moissanite stones we use have a VS - VVS clarity and are DEF colorless. 

Societal and environmental impact
The Moissanite gemstones that I use are grown in a controlled environment using modern laboratory techniques. This makes it possible to receive Moissanite directly from the source. That means that the Moissanite is not only  traceable but also more ethically sourced than other types of gemstones.

I have designed Dilly from the ground up with an environmentally conscious mindset. Similar to how I make use of recycled metals and eco-friendly packing materials, Moissanite is a responsible choice when considering the environment. Moissanite’s sustainable production process leads to it having a smaller carbon footprint, requiring absolutely no mining.

The allure of Moissanite
Originating from beyond our solar system, the fire and sparkle found within Moissanite stones leaves me awestruck. The unearthly beauty found in Moissanite has its roots in its crystalline structure. Not only does Moissanite’s strength and brilliance come from its silicon and carbon base, both elements strengthen the bones and skin of our own bodies as well. This reminds me of one of my favourite poems by Nikita Gill:

“We have calcium in our bones, iron in our veins, carbon in our souls, and nitrogen in our brains. 93 percent stardust, with souls made of flames, we are all just stars that have people names.” 

I create each piece of jewellery with the intention to strengthen this cosmic connection. This is one of the major reasons I love to work with Moissanite in Dilly’s jewellery pieces.

Care for Moissanite
Although Moissanite gemstones are very tough, they can still be damaged from a hard fall or blow. It is recommended to put your Moissanite jewellery away safely by storing them individually in the boxes they are delivered in. For cleaning your Moissanite, use of a warm soapy liquid and a soft toothbrush is suggested. Be sure to dry the stone afterwards so that no soapy residue remains. With the right love and care, Moissanite will last a lifetime and beyond.
